Having been a pedestrian and cyclist in Harrisonburg for the past 4 years and experienced the best and worst it has to offer I am glad that the city Mayor it taking this issue seriously. Having ridden a bicycle in the UK where cycle lanes are common place I am continuously baffled by the lack of safe space for cyclists. This year alone, I have been forced off the road by trucks/buses twice and fallen off once because I had to take alternative routes because snow was not cleared from the bike path (it is still covered 2.5 months after our first snow).

If the facilities and safety for cyclists in Harrisonburg are improved then more people will be prepared to take to alternative transport. I am just stubborn, most people would have given up long ago.

I hope you have a successful trip and that you are able to learn a great deal from them.

Many thanks

James Carter

I'd like to know how Davis, CA both teaches and enforces bicycle traffic laws. I mean this in the broadest way possible, making sure non-cyclists know cyclist's rights (like James' situation), making sure cyclists operate without disregard to traffic laws (like I see all the time on the JMU campus), etc.

Thanks!

We will be meeting with city and campus police and officials to discuss this later today. Outreach and eduction to both cyclist and non cyclist is very important to help grow bicycle community. We will discuss this at one of several post trip community discussions.
